For nearly three years, a group of employees at the Shell/Motiva Refinery in Norco has been putting the pedal to the metal to help fund multiple sclerosis research. Louisiana Artist Association, which is based in St. Charles Parish, held an open art show at Clearview Mall on June 12-14. An open art show is open to both members and nonmembers. A new geotube levee is being built along the eastern 6 1/2 miles of beachfront at Grand Isle by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It will replace the levee that was almost entirely destroyed by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. When Norma Rhodes, 76, planned a family trip to New York City, she had no clue what her 5-day vacation would bring. Local children who are mentally or physically disabled had the opportunity of a lifetime - to participate in the Challenger baseball league.
A local youth ministry is taking a stance against abortion, and speaking out against violent anti-abortion protests, with a one-two punch through their “KOA: Knock Out Abortion” mission. “Original Party Animal” by Pallie Miller. got the most votes last week and is the June 11 weekly winner in the St. Charles Herald-Guide’s Camera Shootout 2009 photo contest. Congratulations to Ashley. Lowell and Karen Boyer of Paradis announce the engagement of their daughter, Lacy Anne Boyer, to Mark Donnell Griffith, son of Mark and Annette Griffith of Watson. The wedding will be on July 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Destrehan. Air Force Junior ROTC has approved the Silver Valor Award for Cadet Jeremy Patrick Mayeaux. The St. Charles Parish All-Star 10U girls took first place in the “West Side All-Star Warm-up Tournament" in Brusly on June 13 and 14.
A 23-year-old Luling man was arrested last week and charged with layering several local businesses on River Road with graffiti, even coming back to hit some of the businesses again after they had covered it up, according to St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes. School is out for the summer and that means it’s time to fish, fish and fish some more. Former St. Charles resident, Akeem Isaac follows in the footsteps of his uncle, Terrance Isaac - Hahnville High School graduate, in playing collegiate football. Annual hunting and fishing licenses go on sale June 1 each year and expire June 30 of the following year. A seasonal rise in the Mississippi River forced the Spillway Road in the Bonnet Carre Spillway to close on May 13, and the parish has no set date on when the road will be reopened.

After a number of requests to the state have failed to elicit much response, Council President Terry Authement wants to initiate a task force to draw attention to the many problems motorists encounter while driving on U.S. 90.
